Shopping in the Lake District
Not everything in South Lakeland is about gorgeous scenery or adrenalin-fuelled activities; there’s nothing more relaxing than checking out one of the many character-filled markets in our ancient market towns of Kendal, Sedbergh, Kirkby Lonsdale, Ambleside, Milnthorpe and Ulverston.
The area is renowned for local produce and you can buy delicious foodstuffs from farmers’ markets, shops and delicatessens. For other quality local crafts and produce, look out for the Made in Cumbria sign.
Sedbergh is England's first Book Town, offering a treasure trove of second-hand and collectors' books. It has booksellers ranging from general bookshops to specialists in music, transport, textiles and theatre. To find more bookshops in our area, look no further than the Dales & Lakes Bookshop Trail!
South Lakeland is an excellent area for shopping, with a diverse range of well-known high street stores and independent retailers offering something for all tastes and budgets. Enjoy some retail therapy at K Village – The Lakes Outlet, Westmorland Shopping Centre, Elephant Yard and Blackhall Yard in Kendal, or in the hundreds of delightful smaller shops in our surrounding towns and villages. Independent shops, craft centres, galleries and visitor attractions are perfect places to buy treats for your friends, your home or yourself; you will find affordable art, designer jewellery, ceramics, accessories and all kinds of gifts. Go on – you know you want to!
